Australian Education System

Australian education system offers primary, secondary, and tertiary education.

School education between the ages of six and sixteen (Year 1 to Year 9 or 10) is compulsory. School education is similar across Australia, except minor variations between states and territories. School education is 13 years and divided into:

● Primary school - starting at Kindergarten/Preparatory through to Year 6 or 7.

● Secondary school -

        • Secondary school - starting at Years 7 to 10 or 8 to 10.

        • Senior secondary school - Years 11 and 12.

● Tertiary education - Tertiary education includes both higher education (including universities) and vocational education and training (VET).

School students may contact education agents or individual schools for their enrolment however all enrolments must be finalized through the State Education Authority. Each state has its designated Education Authority for international students.

Note: If your school-aged children coming with you while you are doing your further study in Australia, all school-aged children must enroll in school. Your children may be eligible to be exempt from paying school fees depends on your visa and the current study in Australia.

Work Permit

While studying in Australia, you and your eligible family member can work up to 40 hours fourth nightly (the period of 14 days starting on a Monday) during your study or training is in session and unlimited during the break. Only family members of students studying a masters or a doctorate degree can work unrestricted hours once the primary student visa holder has started their course. This can be a great way to find study-related work or simply pay for your lifestyle in Australia. After completion of your study, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate Visa to put your newly gained knowledge to use and gain local work experience.

Work After Graduation

Eligible for Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485).

A temporary visa that allows international students to live, study and work from 2 years to up to 4 years after they finished their studies in Australia.

International students who graduate with a degree, or qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations Australia needs and their course completed as a result of at least two academic years (92 weeks) study and student were physically in Australia for at least 16 calendar months to complete the study on a student visa, then student will be eligible for Temporary Graduate Visa from 2 years to up to 4 years depending on their course of study and occupation.

This Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) Visa (Post Study Work Stream) could be extended up to 1 or 2 years. Students who completed their course in a regional area and lived in a regional area while they are on their first 485 visa are eligible for this Second Subclass 485 Visa.

On Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) Visa, Visa holders have fulltime work and study rights, therefore, on this visa most students try to find related work experience (helps to get 5 migration point), complete their professional year program (PY) (also helps to get 5 migration point), NATI (also helps to get 5 migration point) and try to gather more points towards their migration to Australia or save money for further study.

Immigration Opportunity

Claim up to 20 migration points towards migration to Australia.

International students who have completed at least 1 Degree, Diploma, or Trade qualification which was for at least 2 years (minimum 92weeks CRICOS registered) from an Australian institute can claim 5 migration points.

If International students have a Master's degree by research or a Doctorate from an Australian educational institution that included at least 2 academic years in a relevant field then they can claim an additional 10 migration points.
